Arequipa is the colonial capital of the Arequipa region in Peru. It is surrounded by three volcanoes and features Baroque buildings constructed from sillar, a white volcanic stone. In its historic center, you will find the Plaza de Armas, an impressive main square. To its north stands the 17th-century neoclassical Basilica Cathedral, which houses a museum displaying artwork and religious artifacts.

Here, you’ll learn about the history of sillar, its extraction process, and how it has been used throughout history. You’ll also see a detailed carving of the Church of the Society of Jesus, made by the artisans themselves.
Next, we’ll continue to the Culebrillas Ravine, about 30 minutes away. Upon arrival, we’ll take a 20-minute walk through a narrow canyon shaped by water over time. At the end of the path, we’ll find ancient petroglyphs left by the Wari culture. Return to the city.
