Arequipa

gthArequipa is the colonial capital of the Arequipa region in Peru. It is surrounded by three volcanoes and features Baroque buildings constructed from sillar, a white volcanic stone. In its historic center, you will find the Plaza de Armas, an impressive main square. To its north stands the 17th-century neoclassical Basilica Cathedral, which houses a museum displaying artwork and religious artifacts.

Itinerary:

DAY 01: Arequipa

• Arrival at Arequipa airport and transfer to the selected hotel.
• Meals: Not included.

DAY 02: Arequipa – Sillar Route

• Breakfast at the hotel.
• 08:00 to 08:30 AM: Pickup from central hotels and start of our tour to visit the quarries and areas where sillar originated.
• The first stop is Añashuayco Quarry, approximately 45 minutes away. This quarry is still active, allowing us to observe stonemasons at work. We will learn about the history of sillar, its crafting process, and its historical uses. Here, you can also see a stone carving of the Church of the Society of Jesus, made by the quarry workers themselves.
• Next, we head to Quebrada de Culebrillas, a 30-minute drive away. Upon arrival, we will take a 20-minute walk through a small canyon formed by water erosion. At the end of the walk, we will see petroglyphs created by the Wari culture, then return.
• 01:00 PM: Arrival at Arequipa’s city center (tourist drop-off point).
• Meals: Breakfast.

DAY 03: Arequipa

• Breakfast at the hotel.
• At the appropriate time, transfer to the airport.
• Meals: Breakfast.
